It's all very singular and reminiscing of a blown tractor trailer tire. The tobacco lighted easily with what seemed to me to be a great lot of smoke and without significant drawing on the pipe. If you are not in to good Turkish,Virginia,Cyprian Latakia,and in the highest quality,pass it by.As for me and my pipes, we shall enjoy this most wonderful and relaxing leaf. Although it's not MY number one tobacco, I am sure it will be to many. It comes in crumble-cake, which is an annoyance if you carry / travel your pipes, but is really the right packaging for this style of tobacco. I recommend getting on the waitlist que. This is what a hand-made high-quality English blend is supposed to be. the virginias add an interesting and tasty complexity to the flavor. The perfect full(er)English blend. Dark flakes that crumble very easily (a little too easy, my only minor complaint), a nearly perfect burn, consistent flavor throughout the bowl, and a delicious taste that goes well in the evening with good beer, bourbon or turkish coffee. It sets it apart in flavor from other blends in the genre. How disappointing. Definitely not! C&D does flakes much the same way in which they seem so fermented they barely stay together and just disintegrate when handling. From the onset, the pungency of the latakia and the sweetness of the Virginias stand out, but in short time the Orientals do perk up a bit and subtle flavors redolent of sour cream and ripe blue cheese appear. After wanting to try this tobacco for a long time I finally had the opportunity last night when I went to a party and the host had a fantastic assortment of tobaccos for the party guests. No residue is left on the fingers. This is one of those blends I have smoked over the years and never reviewed. First I wanted to fill in the gaps from my original review: Upon originally opening the tin and noticing the "Iodine" smell and taste( see original review above ), I proceeded to spread the tobacco out on the table to see if I could air the Iodine out of the tobacco. It's a kind of collector's mentality where we enjoy the idea of having "rare" things and we over-infate their relative merits accordingly. Clearly a four star blend with no detractors. Woodbridge is a wonderfully complex mixture of six light Virginias, The manufacturer should double the wholesale price to let the blend go to those who appreciate it, and to prevent over-hoarding and scalping. The smoking flavor is on the medium to full side. I don't know, maybe I've just smoked too much of it. Not for everyday use, but if you're sitting on your own in the evening in your living room or porch without having to do anything, Penzance is your best friend. Second, the crumble cake cut allows the smoker to rub it out to their liking. I suspect this may be a varietal thats since become extremely rare or even extinct. :). The latakia and the orientals mix smoothly and the virgina gives just enough of a kick to keep this blend exciting. Although I enjoy the taste--which is full, deep, and very tobacco-y--I find that this stuff often smokes wet and bitey for me. Don't stress over finding it. I actually gave a tin to a friend, and sent back some tins to Richard in order to exchange them for other english blends I enjoy more. It does have a decent nicotine kick, which I started to feel about 1/2 to 2/3 through the bowl. Latakia! Penzance, however, offers a pleasant flavor for an occasional departure from my customary favorites. Seriously. I was expecting a luxuriously rich, opulent, and flavorful smoke - pleasing to the taste, nose, and sinuses. However, Penzance is VERY cool burning and works well in thin-walled pipes that otherwise are too hot to handle with most tobaccos. Was my heart pure enough? Age When Smoked: it must be aged. Don't smoke too slow. This special aging process is probably done in the open air with lots of humidity or dampness to keep the tobacco moist while allowing bacteria and other organisms to thrive and do their decaying thing. A wonderful complex secret recipe of the finest Virginias, choice Turkish and Orientals and Cyprian Latakia, all hand blended, hard pressed, and broad cut into thick flakes. (Sigh!). A unique blend presented in a classy little tin. I must first apologize for this review in advance. I find that the tobacco is slightly wetter than others I have smoked, and this has caused problems in lighting and proper packing. What a delight. Is a good English mixture, full rich (due to Orientals), but is too strong. It was a bit wet from the bag and took a bit to ignite, but it packed easily and burned perfectly. This is a blend that defines the word 'synergy' and is my special treat when I am looking for seductively smooth black Latakia magic. I buy in bulk to get the best for my dollar but I sure do love those tins!!! 3. Penzance, Penzance thou casteth that lovely nicotine trance. Dark, Still somewhat bitter, but getting towards a good bitter. It smokes velvet smooth with a sweetness and taste that makes one believe this is really high-grade leaf. Burning very slow. Given the reviews I expected something quite enjoyable. I'm glad that everyone enjoys it. A nice but not too bold Latakia presence, takes turns with the Orientals to deliver some great variations through the Virginia's. And Esoterica has a knack for bringing nuances to its blends that can't be found in any other brand (well, except for Germain, but since they are blended by the same company, ). Im an everyman type of tobacco taster: if I taste it, you probably will too. The slices are easily rubbed out. In any case, I was enjoying Nightcap and Old Ironsides and those were excellent blends that I didn't find fussy, so Penzance became a distant memory. The thing is that there are so many fans that JF Germain and Son can not keep up with the production. Upon opening this, it smells just plain wonderful to me. I'm not trying to be funny here but I believe one might catch a better buzz by going outside & just breathing some of our good, old polluted air. This has become my favorite tobacco overall. Opening a tin will cause your dog to howl, your wife to leave you, and in the end it might likely kill you. This is monotonous and overpowering, with no subtlety. Is Penzance worth the outrageous prices that are being charged on ebay? Taste is just right, with no lat smoked ham aftertaste. Packing: Packed very easily. Lately, I've been sampling Latakia and Orientals, or a combination of such. Well that is an individual call. Soft smooth and cool a pensive experience. As for the taste its a true Balkan. That said I will try to give some tips that work for me with this blend. There is more smoke here than from pure Latakia, leading me to wonder if they smoke the cakes after they are pressed. Well some day, when Germain finally fades into glory, old pipesters will wail and gnash their teeth, much like some of our compatriots do about Balkan Sobranieso don't miss out! When I opened the tin the aroma was of a subdued English, with a mild latakia aroma predominating. The crumble cake slices do indeed crumble quite easily so you can rub this out with minimal effort to whatever consistency you want. I became an avid hobby smoker about 3 1/2 years ago and admit that this blend was a waste on my then virginal tasters. However on my scale, it scores a 7. I was afraid it would be musty or spicy with the oriental content, but these orientals are of the sweeter variety. Wow! But none of them smell this good to bystanders. Packaging: Bag The smoke is c reamy and rich. Creamy campfire smokiness. There is good complexity present as well, several layers of flavor being noticeable under the dense Latakia richness. I select my Charatan Special 211, my english dedicated pipe for this smoke. With the passing of so many great English blending houses, its nice to know you can still find a great English, er, English. Overall, Penzance is good, but G.L. This IS my idea of what a quality English blend should taste like. Smell from the tin: Wow, uhm .. It has it's complexities, and sweetness, and there's definitely an exotic tobacco in there that I haven't quite gotten the hang of identifying, but it's very nice. Virginias drifts in from time to time with suggestions of the greener ages of hay. I want to enjoy this tobacco as many people have.I am not there yet. Damn! I'm going to alternate it with Old Ironsides as the smoke that I smoke after dinner and end the day with. The lingering aftertaste was pleasant and sweet sugary sweet, and similar to sucking on a hard candy. As a tobacco, by Esoterica Tobacciana, Penzance is less than its namesake. But the experience is actually that of the time your brother buys you one of those fake winning lotto tickets. This is like nothing you'll ev er smoke, and you'll likely never smoke it unlessnope..just move on, there are lots of other good blends out there (just none exactly like this one). "Oh you know this tobacco is good.BUT NOT AS GOOD AS PENZANCE!! It's just that the flavor was not very interesting until toward the end when it had dried out some, and then it did improve. I could alternate this with Escudo and never need anything else. Theres a lot of hype with this tobacco and is hard to find. Abingdon is better than this, but I prefer Westminster -- there is just more going on. I had forgot about this. It is a thick broken flake and took some time in getting properly lit as I did not really rub this one out. Seattle Pipe Club Pipe Tobacco The nicotine is in about the mild range. Note: I am a Latakia fan, BTW, but I prefer it to be in some sort of harmony (or perhaps a counterpoint) with the other elements of a given blend. This is truly a darn near perfect smoke. Penzance is one of the few tobaccos on my ?wow list.? This is one of THE most foulest tobacco's you could ever not want to try. Then I cut the label so to fit in the bag, slipped the now emptied boat out of the bag and sealed the bag shut. I still have 20 kilograms in stock. For me the best English Mixture is Chipmann Hill and the Second place is this, Penzance. You will be spoiled! To my way of thinking, it's like drinking decaffeinated coffee. I wouldn't say it makes it better, just very distinct in taste. The taste is extremely pleasant if not addictive. I only smoke this on occasion, but would smoke it more often if it were a little bit closer to my budget. I like the orientals to come forth a little more in a blend like this; some spiciness to balance out the latakia. Wonderful nose exhale. The sample came as mostly crumbled cake, broken into many different fragment sizes, and the moisture level was rather low. 1) The methods in which J.F. I get complaints about the room note but I like it. The room aroma is strong and very harsh. Cool smoke, no bite. I do, however, have a tin of Penzance and a wonderful Parker billiard. Unlike others, I can't really taste any similarity with Margate or anything else really. I am finishing first "tin-full" of that bag-10 months later. I may purchase another tin; I'll certainly smoke it again - but I believe Margate still ranks as the top of the English/Balkan heap. Why? Penzance is a fine flake blend. stage of smoking. If Dunhill's 965 or Squadron Leader were to disappear, I can immediately think of several mixtures that could replace them. As I said, its a blend that requires some attention in order to find true enjoyment. The aroma is typical English latakia. Absolutely no work involved, and we all like that ;) Lights up to a delicious BAM! It is not limited to this blend online, it is also any classic pipe makers like Dunhill, Castello or Ser Jacapo, It seems that there is a desire to put down things that are either scarce or valued by some that drive up the price. When possible, this reviewer prefers to load a mix of strips, chunks, and odd bits together into the same bowl. I guess you need to be at least 55 years old to remember, as they replaced Iodine with less painful over the counter antiseptics, although you can probably still buy it. I called immediately and was able to get a bag. Large clouds of gray smoke still. Similar Blends: Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding. Get a variety under your belt before attempting to tame this one. It gets a lot of traction on the various pipe smoking fora, and there is a suspicion that it is hyped and maybe only a ho-hum smoke. Surely, this is the king of tobacco blends! Maybe it's the warmer temperatures? Boy am I glad I found this early on! It lights up with a very creamy soft flavor but then about mid bowl develops a nice nutty, musky, complex. Don't forget: this is a one time alert. Now I'm stuck with one pound of compost. What an acute observation! I would recommend it to any pipe smoker looking for a thought provoking experience that will leave you wanting more. It is the benchmark I use to insure that my tastebuds are up to par. Not heavy strength. The cans I have are aged I reckon because they have dried out a little. I think it deserves the love. Try it- if you hate it, I'll buy it. Upon smoking the lemongrass comes through, must be that wonderful oriental tobacco. I bought an 8oz brick so i put most in a mason jar to age for a few months so ill se how it is. The smoke is soft and cool with flavors of malt and a tinge of saltiness. Either this didn't age well or else it is a fluke. Tin note is Oriental forward, woody spicy with Latakia bringing up the rear but present in the nose. Sorry to anyone who loves this blend and read this review, Please tell me I'm wrong. A note regarding aging: I've never had one of these little square tins fail, but I have found rust in them after a few years.
