Acts 1, consistent with the rest of the Book of Acts, reminds us that it is not about us; it is about God. And in the room of the house where they were gathered, it obviously became a little bit too small for all that took place, because as these other people take note of it, you get the impression they moved out into a more public location in Jerusalem. And when those come in, how do we process them? And speaking about the deep things of the Kingdom of God to prepare them for what they were to take part in, and what they were to be a part of. So, let's continue our Book of Acts Bible Study. 6We can easily deduce this since Pentecost was 50 days after Passover. He understood that, and again, He is just laying it out that they were troubled and there was doubt. Verses 1-11 describe what happened during that 40-day period between our Lords resurrection and His ascension. "And He said to them, 'Thus it is written, thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and the remissions of sins would be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem, and you are witnesses of these things. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 4This is much like Adam and Eve, who sought knowledge outside of the boundaries of their authority. Hymns sung at Pentecost take the Holy Spirit as their theme, and include: The symbols of Pentecost are those of the Holy Spirit and include flames, wind, the breath of God and a dove. And again, He gives, through Mark's account here, He gives the same commission to go. It is also called Whitsun, but does not necessarily coincide with the Whitsun Bank Holiday in the UK. I remember taking my little bag and walking over and kind of looking around, and sitting down on a bench. It is the day, 40 days after the Resurrection, when Jesus returns to his Father. They remind us that most of the twelve apostles disappear in Acts and the Epistles, and not just Matthias. Long before modern advertising, the Bible had its own versions of before and after. In Genesis, we have a picture of man before the fall and after. In the Book of Judges, we have Gideon as a fearful and reticent man (before), and then we have Gideon after as the brave warrior. And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people, and the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.". The same Jesus who's been taken up will come in a like manner as you saw Him go into heaven." Fourth, the Holy Spirit is portrayed as the Author of the Old Testament Scriptures. He is the One who inspired the words of David in the psalms: 16 Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judaswho became the guide for those who arrested Jesus (Acts 1:16). The Holy Spirit confirms the apostles testimony, especially their claim that they have seen Jesus Christ risen from the dead. My point here is that Luke links the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of our Lord in the Gospels to the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church in Acts. They immediately began telling others about Jesus. Acts 2:1-13 records the events of this Pentecost, about 10 days after Jesus' ascension. Christ did not leave His disciples as orphans. So He begins to teach them from the Scriptures that they might understand, and that they might comprehend what He was and how He had fulfilled everything that they would have understood to one degree, and then even more they had begun to develop a fuller understanding of the prophecies of Isaiah, or Joel, or Jeremiah, or Ezekiel, the statements about the Messiah. To seek this knowledge is to go outside the boundaries of their authority.4. In particular, Judas death was seen to be a part of the divine plan. Some Christian denominations consider it the birthday of the Christian church and celebrate it as such. That is the vision that Jesus has for His Church as articulated by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:16, and they had it at this moment. Acts 2. This is the threefold commission that is given to this group of disciples where they are to be witnesses of Him in the city of Jerusalem, and Judea, and Samariathe wider region of the country, look at it as kind of the wider counties of the country of Israel at the timeand then ultimately, to the end of the earth, to take the Gospel and to be a witness of God, to do this. People should see that in us. They had come up against the two most powerful authorities of their day in their world. So the Word of God is what Jesus took and explained, it is what the Church went to, to explain what was happening, and then, it is the Spirit of God. 28For it seemed best to the Holy Spirit and to usnot to place any greater burden on you than these necessary rules: 29 that you abstain from meat that has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what has been strangled and from sexual immorality. But it was a very intense period of time of Jesus appearing to them both in Galilee and Jerusalem, teaching them from the Scriptures, appearing to them in larger groups, perhaps even, more smaller groups, and in some of the ways they're talking like He did to Peter, on the Sea of Galilee, having meals with them. 3 And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them. The coming of the Spirit is described as: (1) the promise of the Father (verse 4); (2) that which the apostles heard from Jesus (verse 4); and, (3) that which John the Baptist foretold (verse 5). What do we do now? But I had to go to St. Louis about 100 miles north of my hometown and pick up what they called an express bus, that would go through the larger cities. And the tomb was empty, and the disciples had seen Jesus, and the authorities were beside themselves trying to figure it out, looked for the body. The Feast of the Ascension ranks with Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost in the universality of its observance among Christians. Second, we learn that the Great Commission, which our Lord commanded His apostles, was given through the Holy Spirit (1:2). Show them otherwise what had been done, rebuke their unbelief, as it goes along here. The apostles then found themselves speaking in foreign languages, inspired by the Holy Spirit. If we begin to look at one another as less than trustworthy, then that has other consequences in relationships, and that's taking place among the disciples here at this moment. I believe the first chapter of Acts could be titled Before, because it precedes Pentecost in chapter two, and from there on it is definitely after. While we may be eager to get to Pentecost, let us pause long enough to consider Lukes introduction to the Book of Acts and to the transforming power of Pentecost. Did they doubt that it was real? When you read what Peter said about these prophecies from Joel and the Psalmstrust me, folks, Peter's sermon would not have passed doctrinal review by the Jewish doctrinal committee of that day. I believe that this upper room became headquarters for them during the entire 50-day period after our Lords resurrection. And when they reached their decision, they made it clear that their decision was guided by the Holy Spirit. I would suspect that it may have been during that 40-day interval between our Lords resurrection and His ascension. And then they had seen that He was resurrected. The mystery of this paragraph is to explain why Luke went to so much effort (and space) to describe an event which appears to have little impact on the events that follow Pentecost. They need to see within us, Jesus Christ. And second, the replacement of Judas is carried out in a way that is very Old Testament.. "Makeover" programs turn proverbial ugly ducklings into swans. We sometimes just kind of tail off when we get to the end of one of the Gospels and we know the events, Christ was crucified, Christ was risen, and we don't look at some of the details there. Finally, verses 15-26 are the account of the selection of Matthias as the twelfth apostle, a replacement for Judas. In Eastern branches of Christianity, the Day of Pentecost is one of the Great Feasts. Indeed, Acts 2:1 literally reads, "As the Day of Pentecost was being fulfilled." What was fulfilled was the prophecy given by both Jesus and John the Baptist concerning the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is the Word of God and it is the Spirit of God that did it for them, and will do it for you and for I today as we live our lives, as we go about our lives. Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. 15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a gathering of about one hundred and twenty people) and said, 16 Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judaswho became the guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was counted as one of us and received a share in this ministry. 18 (Now this man Judas acquired a field with the reward of his unjust deed, and falling headfirst he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. Again, what they thought that they were becoming a part of was a movement that was noble, that was good, there had been many movements of other Messiah-type figures at this period of time in Judea. The Holy Spirit designated Barnabas and Saul. Put another way, the same Holy Spirit who empowered Jesus as He gave the Great Commission is the One who will empower the apostles (and the church) to carry out this command. They weren't orphans, and we are not either in our life.
